A process as fascinating as it is complex, requiring high technical skills and specific attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When 3d Printing Meets Cast Iron: Challenges and Solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Producing a 3D mold is just the beginning. When the artifact must withstand filling with high-density molten metals at extreme temperatures, physical parameters come into play that cannot be overlooked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video, we see the creation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prototypes.it\/en\/materials\/cast-iron-prototypes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ductile iron<\/strong><\/a> prototype, an alloy that melts above 1450 \u00b0C and has a density of 7.5 kg\/dm\u00b3. Conditions in which even substantial thicknesses can bend or fail if <strong>precise protective measures<\/strong> are not adopted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, each mold is <strong>carefully buried and compacted<\/strong> with sand around the structure. The molten alloy is poured with extreme precision into the cavities of the printed model. A movement that is too fast, an uncertainty in the hand, or a slight turbulence can generate <strong>splashes, air inclusions, or metallurgical defects<\/strong> that irreparably compromise the piece.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why the technical staff at <em>Prototypes<\/em> performs each pour with <strong>continuous, smooth, and controlled movements<\/strong>, ensuring a homogeneous and regular flow. This is one of the key points for achieving optimal solidification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solidification, Mold Destruction, and Post-Processing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solidification phase of the alloy can last from a few hours to over two days, depending on the size of the piece. Forcing the cooling would compromise the internal structure of the material, making it fragile or unusable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once this phase is completed, the sand mold, which in the meantime has been practically destroyed by the heat, disintegrates easily. This system, called <strong>lost mold casting<\/strong>, also allows the creation of <strong>complex geometries and undercuts<\/strong>, otherwise impossible with traditional molds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each piece is finally <strong>shot-blasted, de-gated, and deburred<\/strong>, before moving on to quality control and delivery stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of industrial 3D printing does not end in the digital design phase.
