Case-hardening steel is a material widely used in the creation of functional prototypes and mechanical components subject to heavy wear. It is distinguished by the ability to achieve a very hard surface while maintaining a tough and resilient core, ideal for high mechanical load applications.

Two representative examples are:

  • C10: unalloyed steel, easily machinable and weldable, ideal for general use. After case-hardening heat treatment, it offers good wear resistance and is used for structural and mechanical parts requiring complex shapes and precision.
  • 18NiCrMo5: alloyed steel with nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, ensures excellent toughness and hardness. It is perfect for drive shafts, gears, camshafts and other elements that need to last over time while undergoing high stress.

The combination of design versatility and high mechanical performance makes case-hardening steels a frequent choice in rapid prototyping projects for the automotive, industrial, and machine tool sectors.
