Lost Wax Casting for Precision Metal Prototypes

Lost Wax Casting for Precision Metal Prototypes

Investment casting, also known as lost wax casting, is a technique that uses sacrificial wax patterns identical to the geometries of the final piece. This technology is ideal for producing complex and high-precision metal prototypes, in both aluminum and steel, faithfully reproducing every detail.

Features

How Investment Casting Works

The sacrificial patterns (waxes) are assembled into a structure called a tree, where the pieces represent the “grapes” and the “stem” is the feed channel for the molten metal. The tree is immersed in liquid plaster or ceramic, then fired: the refractory material solidifies, while the waxes dissolve leaving a cavity identical to the pattern.

Depending on the shell material, it’s possible to cast aluminum (plaster shell) or steel (ceramic shell). The ceramic shell requires a longer and more complex process, with repeated dips in the slurry followed by drying.

Why Choose It

Wax Pattern Manufacturing Techniques

Direct Digital Polystyrene Printing

It’s a quick and cost-effective solution, but with a rough surface finish and accuracy of approximately ±0.16 mm.

Wax Casting in Silicone Molds

Using stereolithographic masters, compact and highly detailed models are obtained, with accuracy up to ±0.05 mm.
